We are told that a Bible Study Group has formed part of Perth U3A since 1988, very shortly after the branch itself was set up. We usually choose to study one of the books of the Bible, rather than a biblical theme, and nearly always use a published workbook to help with continuity and focus. Discussion of the relevance of the Bible teaching to our everyday lives forms a major part of the session and often continues into the tea/coffee session that follows.
Ten members enrolled for the 2019-20 session held monthly in the U3A Unit 7 at Perth Business Centre, and our average attendance for the seven meetings was eight. Using the Cover to Cover Bible study handbook “FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS” we studied the Old Testament book of Esther, which describes how a humble orphaned girl became queen of the massive empire of Babylon and, strengthened by her faith and the fasting and prayers of her people, she was instrumental in saving the Jewish people from the destruction plotted by the powerful and evil Haman.
Our last meeting on 10th March coincided with the Feast of Purim held annually to commemorate this event, which we marked by the presentation of Happy Purim cards and by accompanying our usual teas and coffees with the traditional triangular hamantaschen biscuits, the shape of which is said to be that of the favourite headgear of the villainous Haman.
