We are told that a Bible Study Group has formed part of Perth U3A since 1988, very shortly after the branch itself was set up. We usually choose to study one of the books of the Bible, rather than a biblical theme, and nearly always use a published workbook to help with continuity and focus. Discussion of the relevance of the Bible teaching to our everyday lives forms a major part of the session and often continues into the tea/coffee session that follows.
Last year we embarked on studying the well-known Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s gospel comprising only 3 chapters. However, we certainly did not run out of discussion points over the meetings. Many people say that if everyone just lived by Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon then life would be grand, but once you delve into it you realise how high a standard it is and really impossible to fulfil by human endeavour alone. We found it challenging, drawing out many questions and so brains were well exercised.
Next year, as is our custom, we will turn to the Old Testament for our subject. Some suggestions are: The Ten Commandments and their relevance today; some of the Psalms; or what we can learn from characters such as Moses, Abraham & co, Elijah or Nehemiah. Yet to be decided! We all hope to be present again in September.
