Our aim is to to visit viewpoints, which are often, but not always, on hilltops. Our level of activity falls between the Glen Walking and the Strollers groups.
Our walks are normally between two and three hours duration, plus time for a coffee stop, and we aim to be completed by lunchtime. The walk length is usually around 5 miles. We usually have a light lunch together at a nearby venue after the walk. The total amount of climbing on any one outing is normally limited to around 1000 feet, and is usually less. Except for a couple of outings in the summer, walks tend to be no further than 90 minutes drive away from Perth, usually substantially less, especially in winter. Membership is around 50 and normal attendance level is close to 20.
We hold review meetings twice a year, one in April, before the spring/summer season and the other in September, a few days after the u3a Registration Meeting to welcome new members before the autumn/winter season. For the review meeting, every member is encouraged to bring along a walk for consideration. We then vote on the walks to include in the coming season’s programme. We also have a briefing on suitable equipment for the various conditions to be expected in the coming season.
We are encouraged to try our hands (or feet) at leading a walk. Experienced backup is given.
