We aim to explore a range of Family History sources in order to move the research of our members forward. We also share our expertise to help us all move forward.
During 2019-20 we met monthly in Unit 7 to share family history research goals, success stories and brick walls. The group’s experience ranged from experienced researchers to those who were just starting out. Whatever the level of experience, we all enjoyed hearing about others’ successes and offering suggestions when queries were raised or simply encouragement when needed.
Discussions this session have included methods of recording research findings, genealogy websites worth visiting, dating and identifying ancestors in early photographs and online learning in the subject. Among the courses undertaken were Strathclyde University’s Genealogy MOOC available via FutureLearn and Pharos Tutors’ Scottish Research Online, which all participants found useful. We have also made use of the guidance notes provided by the U3A Genealogy Subject Adviser.
In conjunction with Genealogy Group 2, some of our group were shown round the Local & Family History section and the Perth & Kinross Archive at the AK Bell Library in October. Various group members have also visited the Registrar’s Office in Perth and attended Family History Fairs run by Family History Societies. Several of us are members of Family History Societies for an area we are researching and have found their support and deeper knowledge of the area in question most helpful.
This year, we have started a project to collate our Scottish family interests with a view to eventually displaying the areas/names we’re researching on a map. This work will be continuing into next year, when we also look forward to more collaboration with Group 2.
