The present group has been in existence since January 2015. Each year we choose a theme and members contribute with presentations based on their reading around the subject or research into it.

Our chosen themes for the 2019-20 session were “The medieval period in Perth, Perthshire and beyond. We addressed a wide range of related topics, with group members doing presentations to six of our meetings. These included ‘Settlements and society in the medieval period’, ‘Pilgrimage’, ‘The port of Perth in its early days’, ‘Medieval law and order’, ‘Perth’s monasteries’, ‘Trade, commerce and guilds’, ‘ Medicine in medieval times’,
and ‘Medieval ships and shipping’. Our final meeting could not take place.
We also watched a DVD about Rosslyn Chapel, and – at our first meeting – welcomed visitors from U3As in the West of Scotland who told us about their project investigating Scotland’s Radical Rising of 1819. One of our members followed this up by doing some research on how this impinged upon Perthshire and a summary of his work was circulated in lieu of a presentation to our last meeting.
Once again we had a slot on ‘Archaeology in the news’ at those meetings where time permitted it. The powerpoint presentations ranged widely over recent developments which have featured in the press. The group membership was in the mid 20s, with attendance ranging from 15 – 22, with an average of 19 members present per meeting. 22 members attended on a regular basis throughout the session.
Our plans for visits during the Summer were abandoned with the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic.
