Botanical illustration is the portrayal of plants in ways that are scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing. It is a lovely combination of science and art, though you don’t need to be an expert in either to join this group. If you love plants, this is an excuse to get to know some of them better through drawing and painting them.
The main media we use are pencil, watercolour, and pen and ink. A selection of materials is available for members to try. We are predominantly a practical illustration group, but learn some history and botany along the way. What we do depends to some extent on what members want to do. We welcome both complete beginners and those with some experience of drawing and painting.
The Botanical Illustration group enjoyed a good first year with 9 enthusiastic members. Some lovely work has been produced in pencil, coloured pencil and watercolour of a wide range of beautiful plants using live specimens. It has been a great way to get to know plants at the same time as developing artistic techniques
