We meet as a house group to read and study poetry together, starting our meetings with coffee. Each session we choose a selection of poets - most meetings we concentrate on one of these. Our usual pattern is to have past and present poets, Scots and English, female and male, and overseas poets including poetry in translation. We also decide topics which are the basis of free choices by members. In past sessions, we've spent part of a meeting on:
- Desert Island Poetry, where a member selects 10 poems to accompany them to their island
- Poetry Please, when we each bring a new poem or an old favourite and say a few words about our choice.
In 2022-23, we studied the work of seven poets and chose poetry to fit two topics. Our chosen poets were Hannah Lowe, Warsan Shire, Douglas Dunn, Oodgeroo Nooruccal, Dorothea Mackellar, Ilya Kaminsky and Edward Thomas. Our topics were ‘Choice and Chance’ and ‘Poems for a Desert Island’.
We learn and laugh a lot!
