Our purpose is to allow members to meet like-minded travellers and suggest potential holiday destinations, which can be in the UK or overseas and for any duration and at any time of the year. However, note that we do not all travel together but rather in small groups (although there is no limit on minimum or maximum numbers) which gives individuals the opportunity to participate in more than one holiday if they wish.
In the first few meetings of the new session we discuss the holiday destinations which have been suggested until an initial commitment is requested from members to establish which holidays will go forward for further discussion and potentially into the booking process and which will be discarded or, as sometimes happens, held over for further discussion to the following year. We also welcome any feedback or travel advice about the holidays undertaken during the previous year or from any members’ holidays taken outwith the U3A.
Covid 19 has had a big impact on the group in 2019-20. Our April meeting was cancelled because of the lockdown and the March meeting had a low turn-out of 16, possibly because by that time it was becoming apparent that any forthcoming holidays would be cancelled. Attendance numbers are usually in the low twenties although there was a high of 27 at the November meeting.
Ten members had planned to visit Arles in France leaving on 15 April and eight members were planning to visit Mantua in Northern Italy leaving on 11 May, but both trips had to be cancelled because of the lockdown. Other destinations being looked at either for later this year or next year were Stockholm, Copenhagen, Salzburg, Budapest. Only time will tell if we will be able to rearrange these overseas trips for next year.
Instead of our regular meeting on 6 December a Christmas lunch was held at the Queens Hotel in Perth, which 21 members attended.
We meet at the Riverside Church and as a venue this suits our requirements because of the kitchen facilities and parking arrangements. As always, the success of the group relies entirely upon the input from members in suggesting and participating in holidays.
