Our purpose is to have a look at some period in history from a number of different angles. This past year we chose to have a look at Russia. Since we have 8 meetings we chose 7 Tsars starting with Catherine the Great and finishing with Nicholas II. This gave us time for a very brief look at the revolution which counted as week 8.
We followed our normal procedure. Each meeting was built around a particular Tsar. Everybody then chose a different person, event, group etc that was in some way related to that Tsar, and came to the meeting ready to say something about their choice. Sometimes members chose people or events that were very close to the Tsar in question eg an attempted assassination or a member of his or her family. Other times people ranged far and wide with their choices - in fact it was sometimes difficult to discern much of a connection to the Tsar at all! This is how the group operates and it always seems to work very well for us. It is particularly pleasing when we find that our different starting points come together in unexpected ways to give us a more complete picture.
Next year for each meeting members will be given a half century (eg the first half of the 1700's) and will research a woman of their choice who lived at that time.
