The normal pattern is for us to agree together on a Reading List for the year , and to then review each book at the monthly meeting. The result is usually a mix of contemporary fiction , older classics and usually a non fictional book is included in the list.
At most meetings the conversation readily moves on to other books which members may have read and can recommend to others. We do use the Book Sets provided by the Library , and we have registered with the Library as this service is now charged at £5 per member. This year a small group attended the Perth Festival to hear Val McDermid discussing her latest book and her role as a Judge for the Man Booker prize. This proved very enjoyable and was reviewed with the wider Book group at a subsequent meeting.
For the summer period we read either Kim by Rudyard Kipling or The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and reviewed these at the September meeting.
The Reading List for 2018/19 was :
Iam Iam Iam : Maggie O’Farrell
Electric Dream : Philip Dick
Good to be God : Tibor Ficher
The Last Tudor : Phillipa Gregory
Magpie Murders : Anthony Horowitz
The Left Hand of Darkness : Ursula Le Guin
