German for Beginners
Leader/Coordinator: | Karen W |
Aims and Objectives of the group:
To introduce the German language and develop the ability to introduce oneself, give and request information in a variety of everyday settings (meeting others, talking about family and holidays etc.) and understand what is being said in response!
As well as conversational and listening skills, we also read short texts and follow up with comprehension exercises of various kinds. Group members are given the option of following up our sessions with further internet-based activities.
Any expertise needed:
A willingness to ‘give it a go’.
Note that our group has progressed beyond being absolute beginners, so a knowledge of some German is now essential, if you are not to be immediately out of your depth!
Equipment needed (rough costs if any):
Copy of the ‘Willkommen’ beginners coursebook.
Maximum number permitted in the group: 5
Location, day and time of meetings:
2nd Thursday 10.30-12.30 at my house: Leader’s home
A brief description of a typical meeting:
We spend equal amounts of time on the skills of speaking, listening and reading. I like to use a multi-media approach, so DVDs and You Tube clips are used extensively to provide sources of bang-up-to-date German. Games also feature regularly and working in pairs is also encouraged to give people more confidence.
Follow-up activities are always available to try at home to consolidate what has been learned – but no compulsion!
The atmosphere is relaxed and refreshments are provided at the halfway point.
