French 1
Leader: | John T |
Aims & Objectives of the group:
To provide opportunity to practise and, hopefully, improve members’ knowledge of French and to meet with others who share an interest in France and the French way of life.
Any expertise needed:
Some basic knowledge of French is useful – You do not have to be good at it. Enthusiasm and a sense of humour are always welcome.
Equipment needed:
Access to a CD player and a computer useful, but not essential. Otherwise nothing
Max number permitted in the group:
9 - we meet in houses and this is the absolute maximum we can accommodate
Location, day & time of meetings:
We meet in members’ houses on a rota system. 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month from 10 am to 12 noon.
A brief description of of a typical meeting:
The group has now been going for over 10 years and we have used various coursebooks. We now try to involve at least 2 or more of the 4 language skills, i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in each of our sessions, using a variety of sources, including topical items from the Internet. Many however are home produced and may include worksheets, quizzes, crosswords, dialogues, word games, anecdotes etc. We now feel able to attempt translations from English into French and we look at aspects of grammar as and when this is helpful. We have read together many short stories from French literature and at the moment are enjoying ‘Jean de Florette’ by Marcel Pagnol. Homework is set only very occasionally and usually is preparation for our next session.
Update October 2020
Just to let you know that our group has been having Zoom meetings twice a month since June. 2 members were not happy with the technology but all the others seem to be enjoying our sessions. We use topical items downloaded from the internet and quizzes based on a french book we are reading (Jean de Florette by Marcel Pagnol).
Not the same experience as our usual meetings, but we still enjoy our virtual meetings.
