Philosophy
Leader/coordinator: | Denis D |
Aims and Objectives of the group:
To amuse ourselves by discussing some of the philosophical conundrums that have cropped up over the ages; to discover how the methods of philosophical enquiry might help us better understand our world; to enjoy meeting others with similar interests, share our experiences and make friends.
Any expertise needed:
Only a curiosity about life.
Equipment needed (rough costs if any):
In discussion we choose a book to study over the next weeks, months or years. 30p collection to 50p
per session is saved to pay all or part of the cost of the next book.
Maximum number permitted in the group: 12
Location, day and time of meetings:
Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month. 2.00pm - 4.00 pm at member's home, Studham. This pattern can be varied by agreement.
A brief description of a typical meeting:
chit chat; agreement on a plan for the meeting; reading some pages of the current book with frequent stops to discuss points raised; listening to/viewing recorded material, perhaps related to what we have read or perhaps on a different topic. This will normally be supported by notes or a transcript. As in the reading session there are stops for discussion at appropriate times as well as at the end. People are encouraged to contribute their views but there is no pressure; chat about meeting dates and other 'business'. Coffee/tea and biscuits kindly supplied by our hostess.
