The Group has been running now for over 6 years. We study different topics and look at different aspects of that topic over time. Each person in the Group presents a paper.
We have studied Crime and Punishment; a county, and a famous building within that county, and we each prepared a paper on either that building, or a person connected with it. We have also studied various aspects of colonialism, and covered a very wide range of colonial expansions from ancient to modern times. We also researched a person who we knew of, but did not know very much about. Some of us researched an aspect of a famous person that we did not know about. It was very enlightening.
We have just completed series of presentations on aspects of our industrial history and it’s effects on Society, and are now starting a new topic - an event or person from a country other than our home country (we have both a French and a Swedish member in our group).
As a departure from our usual practice, we have recently arranged a guest speaker. He gave a presentation on Zoom on the Boer War., and also the British Army’s role in World war 1. It was very interesting and enlightening. The speaker was a member of Westerham u3a Military History Group. He has offered to give us a number of talks, and as it is on Zoom, we will invite the members of History Group 2 to join. We also organised a visit to the East Surrey Museum.
We are now meeting once again at a member's house. We are planning to undertake more visits to historic places.
