Cost£8 for three meetingsor £4 per meeting.

The Soper Hall has good facilities for the group, including kitchen, toilets, and wi-fi access to the internet as well as full disabled access and toilet. Free parking for up to 3 hours is available in the public car park above Morrison's supermarket. Tea and coffee is provided free of charge.

The level of experience in tracing family trees varies across the group from those who have spent many years on the challenge, both on-line and in the archives, to complete beginners who are keen to know where and how to start. This means that rather than the Group Co-ordinators acting as tutors, the group functions more as a collective exercise in sharing knowledge and experience, where everyone may have something to offer and something to learn.

Meetings generally comprise a short talk from one of the members, or an invited speaker, followed by problem-solving sessions where the members will split into smaller groups guided by one of the more experienced members. Family History has been transformed by technology, and the digitization of so many records which are now on-line form a bewildering array of sources.

The following are some of the topics covered recently by invited speakers:

Using old photographs to research ancestors
Making the most of libraries, archives and record offices
Making the best use of visiting the National Archives

Occasional visits to places of interest for family history researchers are sometimes organised, details of which are provided at the monthly meetings or via emailed updates.

Those interested in finding out more about their family history should use the contact link on the right hand side to reach one of the Group Co-ordinators.
