DIY GROUP
Group description and activities
This is a practical DIY group, currently in start-up, and open to anyone interested in DIY, whether you’re a beginner or an expert. Our proposed activities to include some or all of the following :-
REPAIR SHOP - bring along your broken or worn household items, furniture or family heirlooms to be repaired and renovated. Most of these projects will involve woodwork and metalwork or other techniques and skills as required.
MAKING THINGS – get creative with recycled materials, rather than buying new. Design and build lamps, furniture, bookcases, shelves, TV stand, etc. Repurposing, upcycling, shabby chic – anything you fancy designing, constructing or renovating.
CRAFTS – There are many skills within the group and we intend to run sessions on :-
Rural crafts - green woodworking e.g. garden obelisk, plant supports, mini hurdles
Textile Design – one of our members is a retired DT and textile design teacher
Stained Glass – repairing existing and designing new stained glass panels
Mosaics – plaques, pictures, table tops – you can cover anything in tesserae or broken china
Bug hotels & birdboxes
HOUSE MAINTENANCE & REPAIR – handy tips from experience DIYers on how to fasten a shelf or curtain rail, drill into a wall, change a plug – anything that you need advice on how to tackle household repairs and maintenance (please note – the group is not a free building and repair service – so don’t expect the group to come round and do all your work for you!)
HOME RENOVATION & IMPROVEMENTS – discussion forum for help and advice on many aspects of home renovation and improvement - how to make internal layout changes (knock out a wall/add a window) and designing and building extensions – what’s involved and what’s possible for the enthusiastic DIYer?
BEGINNERS DIY TRAINING – If you’re a complete novice and want to learn basic DIY skills, then we intend to run some training sessions so you can learn about DIY and use basic tools like saws, drills, screwdrivers, hammers, sanders, etc.
We are a new group, still in start-up, but are lucky to already have members with a good mix of DIY experience that we would like to share with everyone.
