We have decided to study different topics and to look at different aspects of that topic over time. Our first topic was Crime and Punishment, and we looked at this topic on a range of countries and times. Surprisingly, we found that the ancient periods were much more humanitarian in their approach to punishment than more modern times!
Having completed our review of crime and punishment over the ages, we then started a slightly amusing "Balloon Game". This involved us each choosing a character from History (we deliberately chose slightly more obscure characters). We each researched a character, and over the course of the next few meetings, we each be presented a paper on that person's life. The imaginary scenario is that they were all in a hot air balloon, but their combined weight is too much, so three characters have to be ejected from the balloon!
Our next project was to study a number of battles that changed History. We studied the Battle of Lepanto, Battle of Huaihai ( Chinese Civil War 1948), The Battle of Banockburn, The Battle of Stamford Bridge, the Battle of Lutzen, the Battle of Navarino, the Battle of Agingcourt, the Battle of Hastings, the Battle of Bosworth Field.
Having completed this project, we then selected a county, and a famous building within that county, and we each prepared a paper on either that building, or a person connected with it. After that, we studied various aspects of colonialism, and covered a very wide range of colonial expansions from ancient to modern times.
Our next project was to look at a series of dynasties which have had a great impact on the nations where they ruled, and we then currently looking at major inventions, and inventors, which has seen us branch out into science and technology as well as history! We are about to start a study of 12 of the US presidents, deliberately selecting some of the more obscure ones.
For our Christmas social event, we joined forces with some of the members of History 2, and had a guided tour of the Law Courts, and the Temple, followed by lunch at the historic and spectacular Middle temple Banqueting Hall.
The Group is currently full, but there are vacancies in History 2.
