The group meets every month on the second Thursday morning.
During session 2017/18 we have met at Martin Heath Hall, Christchurch. We have been discussing short but landmark British and American novels from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, such as Stella Gibbons’ “Cold Comfort Farm” and Graham Green’s “The End of the Affair”. As so often, we have been surprised at how different the work seemed to our recollections or preconceptions, and were pleased at the impetus the Group had given to a mature read. All the novels provided a fascinating insight into their period.
As usual after the summer, Christmas and Easter we had sessions where we shared our holiday reading, and the range and variety of group members’ choices as always lead to much lending of books.
In session 2018/19 we will be studying a programme of 8 of the best known British novels and will discuss their status as classics, their literary styles and techniques and again we look forward to being surprised by books we thought we knew already.
