Creative writing
Meetings: 2nd Monday, alternate months, 10am-12 noon at the group leader's home in Yoxall. Group Size: 8
Objectives:
(i) Our definition of "creative writing" was agreed by the group, that we would not have hard and fast rules. Poetry could be a genre, if preferred. Factual accounts should not be ruled out, as the creativity aspect would provide an extension to the account: emotions, imagination, sensual observations.
(ii) The maximum length of the contributions is 3,000 words.
(iii) All stories/poems are distributed via email to all of the group, one week prior to the meeting and each piece is discussed at the meeting. The author starts the discussion by telling the group “where the idea came from”. We then contribute our own, individual thoughts about the story - the plot, the characters, the description, the emotions it generates.
(iv) The title for next piece of writing is decided by the whole group.
Titles that we have written about include: “In The Stars”, “A Chequered Past”, “The Knock on the Door” and “Let’s Pretend”.
Recently each member was allocated a different genre: mystery, humour, romance, detective, travel, political, action, religious; we all had the same tile ”Some Things Are Best Forgotten.” Most members found it challenging to have the genre imposed on them - they felt out of their comfort zone. It was a most interesting exercise.
(v) Enjoyment and pleasure is the key to what we are about!
