Spanish Fiction (Intermediate)
The Intermediate Spanish Fiction group is a new group that started in January 2024. It runs on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, from 2 pm to 3.15 pm in the Large Meeting Room in St Ives Library. It will normally run from late September to the end of April only. Two spaces are still available.
We will take turns to read aloud and translate easier Spanish fiction, covering about 6 short pages in each session.
The first book chosen, Por amor al arte, is a short comic novella. It is a ‘graded reader’ aimed at adult lower-intermediate learners of Spanish, and so is far easier than ‘standard’ Spanish literature. The level is A2, i.e. pitched at a suitable level if you have a couple of years of Spanish, and below GCSE. Besides providing some light entertainment, the book will help with everyday, colloquial Spanish and broadening vocabulary.
A link to the relevant Amazon page for the novella is provided beside this page.
There will be preparation to do between sessions, both reading ahead and looking up any unfamiliar words. Missing occasional sessions is not a problem – all you need then do is catch up to the point in the book that the rest of the group has reached.
A minimal group charge equating to around £1 per session will apply, to cover Library booking hire. This will be collected in advance at the first session in January. Based on current numbers, the group charge will £8 for the 7 sessions, or pro rata if joining mid-term.
Our next book, Huellas de sangre, is a collection of three detective stories, which we’ll start in September. This is published in Germany and so the Spanish-German glossaries are not helpful. Nonetheless, this is an outstanding book with high-quality stories at the right level for us. To view a sample of the opening pages on the book’s Amazon page, see the link Our next book beside this page. I can obtain copies at cost if you don’t have an Amazon account.
For an idea of possible future books beyond that, please see Future Spanish Fiction Choices beside this page.
