French Intermediate 1 is a group aimed primarily at visitors to France and anyone else interested in improving their knowledge of the language. It is suitable for anyone who has studied French for about 4 years, including in the past (GCSE/O-level plus duolingo or holidays in France would be ideal).

The group is intended to be relaxed, friendly and fun, and we will find out about different aspects of French life and culture. Activities include listening, reading, translation, grammar and conversation.

We use a variety of resources including an inexpensive intermediate grammar workbook to consolidate rusty basics and a recently published French course book aimed at adult learners at our level.

There will be some preparation to do between sessions. You will need access to a printer to print out materials, or alternatively an electronic device with a reasonable screen (e.g. iPad) to view them.

A termly charge of £5 currently applies to cover materials and occasional venue hire.

Sessions are held on the first and third Wednesday afternoon of the month (1.30 to 3.00 pm). The group meets in the Community Room at Morrisons (St Ives) and at St Ives Library. For meetings in Morrisons, parking is free and there is no obligation to buy drinks or make purchases in the store. In 2025 we will be moving permanently to the Large Meeting Room in St Ives Library, and the termly fee will rise to cover the additional hire cost.

All dates and venues are set out at the foot of this page.

If you would like a higher level of French or some fiction in French, St Ives u3a also offers an Advanced French group and a French Fiction group (click on the Groups tab at the top of this page).
