HISTORY OF ART

Leader Shena Humphreys Tel: 01604 674193

The group meets on the 2nd Thursday morning of the month at St Matthews Parish Centre, The Drive, Northampton.

The group have just finished an indepth coverage of British artists of the 20 th century. Some of the well known artists we have covered range from Lucien Freud to Dame Laura Knight, Paul Nash to Stanley Spencer, David Hockney to Graham Sutherland. Some of the lesser known artists we have looked at include Duncan Grant, Bridget Riley and Beryl Cook and they were equally as fascinating.

We have had three outings this year to the Ashmolean in Oxford, the Stanley Spencer museum in Cookham and lastly to the Alma Tadema exhibition at Leighton House.

We are now moving on to the 20th century painters from the rest of the world. We are starting with a three month in depth study of Picasso using 10 of his paintings as a framework. This will culminate in a visit to the Tate Modern in 2018 for the big retrospective of his work

I would like it to be as other groups I belong to that everyone participates by preparing a piece and contributing information to the group. I am by no means an expert on art and it would be a learning experience for me. I am happy to do all the admin with regards to the group.

Please apply to Shena in the first place by phone or use the email link on the top right.

HISTORY OF ART 2

Leader: Maurice Wilson Tel No: 01604 622163

The group meets on the 4th Thursday between 10.00 and 12.00 at St Matthews Parish Centre, The Drive, Northampton.

NEWS Feb 21 We are meeting on Zoom

Our study themes usually span three months each and these are interspersed by what we term ‘ a general free for all’. When every member will give a ten minute presentation of an artist of choice connected with a general theme..... for instance, in December our theme was. ‘Hope for the future ‘ when each member chose a painting reflecting the theme.

At present we are in the middle of our study on artists of the Bauhaus. We shall complete this in April, after which we shall be moving to a new theme. Images of the works of art are chosen by members themselves and the zoom meeting consists of an outline of the artists work with images chosen by members themselves. Those presenting artists have to engage in their own research which they then share with the group. Consequently .....homework is an inherent aspect of membership.

The group focuses on an analysis of some of the most indicative works of artists through the ages by highlighting significant aspects of their work. The approach is largely chronological through a systematic study of the major art movements. The group has begun this journey with a study of artists of the Italian Renaissance and will continue the progression by moving on to other movements. This is largely a participating venture with active involvement of members in choosing works to be studied in order to stimulate discussion and inspire members to do further study on their own. This approach is intended to encourage group dynamism, to stretch the mind, to have fun and to make new friends.
