Shakespeare

Shakespeare Text & Context

Leader: Denise Legge Tel: 01604 407444

The group meets once a month on the first Friday between 10.30 and 12.30pm at the Leader's home.

We will study the plays of Shakespeare in terms of the text and also performances of the plays.

We would read parts of a chosen play, and then view various filmed interpretations.

I have the full canon of plays on film, produced by the BBC, and also other cinematic versions, which would form the basis of our discussions.

I have a longstanding interest in the social history of C16th England and have for many years been involved in living history interpretations of the period.

As part of our meetings I will offer experience of the music of the period, and information about dress, food and general mores.

I hope to organise visits of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, at London Bankside, to enjoy plays in their authentic form.

Shakespeare for Pleasure

Leader: Nigel Warbis Tel: 07943 810965

The group meets at 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the 2nd Monday of each month at the Leader's home.

Did you hate Shakespeare at school but wonder if you might have missed out of something worthwhile? Perhaps you enjoy watching Shakespeare already and would you like to learn more about his work but don't want to do anything too academic? You might even know quite a lot about Shakespeare already but like the idea of sharing your knowledge and learning more yourself. If any of these apply to you this could be just the group to join.

The group will be continuing to learn more about ‘The Tempest’ for the remainder of 2021. This will be done principally by watching DVD and YouTube links and reading and discussing short extracts from the play, with absolutely no pressure on anyone to read out loud. We have several members who were put off Shakespeare at school but now love coming to the group and discovering how much they were missing.

Please contact the group leader by phone or by email using the link on the right for more information.
