Textile Craft 1

Leader Dianne Copeland Tel: 01604764415
Deputy Maureen Webb Tel: 07955 328378

We are a small friendly Textile/Craft group formed in May 2016. We meet on the third Thursday of the month from 10:00am to 12 noon at members’ homes.

Our efforts so far have produced a felt flower brooch, a hedgehog made by folding an old paperback book. We have had a demonstration of making acholi beads from rolling paper to form the bead. We have had help with learning how to crochet and we are presently working as a group making felt ornaments.

The group has shown interest in Knitting, Ribbon Weaving, Lampshade making, quilting, embroidery and making a cloth bag using 5in squares of material. We are open to suggestions and ideas from the group and hope to cover all our interests and any new ideas in the coming months and will set a flexible programme to cover this and seek help and assistance when we can.

We have space in the group for 1 or 2 new members.

Textile Craft 2

Leader: Marion Whitehouse Tel: 01604 643751
Held every 1st and 3rd Friday 2.00pm-4.00pm at leader’s home.

‘Textile Crafts’ is turning out to cover a wide area of work! Since the group started in September 2013 we have made items with patchwork, ribbon weaving, wool weaving, appliqué, stitchery, silk painting, crocheting , Suffolk Puffs and more. Christmas decorations and gifts have been made in all sorts of ways! At the point of writing this we have embarked on making some quilts for Project Linus which will distribute them to babies, children and teenagers who are ill, distressed, in difficult circumstances.

Also in the pipeline are fabric necklaces à la Liberty and possible crocheting with twine! I’ve forgot to tell you that we’ve also made necklaces with beads (not textile) using the talents and equipment of a group member!

This is a friendly group which shares ideas, skills and things in our stashes and gets things for each other. We encourage and help each other and we tackle a project each at our own level producing the same items with variations in colour, size etc. We enjoy a natter while we work and over the essential U3A tea/coffee. We have a Christmas meal every year in a local restaurant and we have been on a few trips to exhibitions and museums or to top up our stash. We went to a professional silk painter for that project and took part in the U3A Open Day last year.

Beginners or experienced all are welcome and men don’t be shy - get in touch and come along to see us if you are interested. There are photographs of our work on this website and we love talking about what we do!

Please contact Marion on the above telephone number or use the e mail link on the top right.

The new Craft group is now up and running. We are all enthusiastic and looking forward to trying a number of crafts old and new. We have a full programme of projects and hope to add photos to the website at intervals to show some of the amazing things we are making. It is held on the 1st Monday of the month at 2pm in the Leader's home.

We will do a variety of crafts over time including glass painting, pastels, silk painting, decopatch, fimo modelling, papercrafts, and many more. In cards we will do die cutting, stamping, quilling, decoupage, iris folding, etc. Every few months we will all decide on the projects that everyone wants to try in the forthcoming meetings. Come along and have fun while learning something new.

NEWS

The Leathercraft and other groups have been working with the National Leather Collection. See the article published in Sources in February 2018 (Nat\'l Leather Collection -Sources Feb 18)

leathercraftmedium.jpg This is a group for people who are interested in leathercraft and would like to make related craft items. The materials for the first two beginner sessions, where you will have the opportunity to try leather carving, stamping and dyeing, will be provided for free and thereafter group members will work on their own individual projects with support and tools provided. Once you have had a chance to see if this is a craft for you then you will be able to buy leather, tools and other equipment as well as use the resources of the National Leather Collection. Group members have made a variety of items including wallets, belts , bags, bottles, book covers and a miniature saddle.

The group meets at the National Leather Collection, 2nd Floor Grosvenor Chambers, Grosvenor Shopping Centre Northampton, Northampton NN1 2EW. The entrance to the lift /stairs is on the right immediately after coming in from the Market Square.

There are two groups which meet weekly on Wednesday
+ Leathercraft 1 in the morning from 10 - 12am and
+ Leathercraft 2 in the afternoon from 2 - 4pm.

By specific advance arrangement with the leader, members may meet every 2 or 3 weeks, rather than weekly or change session.

Quilting

Leader: Sue Latter Tel: 01604 762917
Deputy: Linda Paterson Tel: 01604 590735

The group meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month from 14.00 - 16.00 hours at The Elgar Centre, 1A High Street,
Upton, NN5 4EN (https://elgarcentre.weebly.com/)

There is a large free car park and the Number 15 bus stops right outside.

As we now have to pay for room hire, there will be a charge of £2 per person at each meeting. We get half price room hire because we are a charity; depending which room we have it will be either £18 or £20 for the two hours. There is room for more as the rooms are quite spacious.

It is not necessary to have any quilting/patchwork experience - there are complete beginners and one or two who are very proficient. They can be hand or machine sewers, or both, and we all help one another, exchanging ideas and tips although there is no 'formal' instruction.

For more information please call Sue or email her by clicking the link on the top right.

Leader: Maureen Webb Tel: 07955 328378
Deputy: Susan Hasdell Tel: 07934 271655

Crochet group 1st Birthday The Northampton U3A Crochet group recently celebrated its first birthday.
Many of our members had never attempted to crochet before so we really did start with the very basics. However, we are a keen, determined lot and persevered. We have managed to produce some wonderful articles from soft toys, bags, throws and even items of clothing.
We sit and crochet and talk and laugh, exchange ideas and patterns, inspire each other and enjoy the company.

New members are welcome and if you are new to the art of crochet we will help get you started. If you are and experienced ‘hooker’ you are very welcome to come and enjoy our meetings and share your experiences. Just bring along some yarn and a crochet hook and, if you have one, a pattern that you would like to follow.

We meet on the morning of the second Thursday of each month at members’ homes and enjoy sharing our ideas and showing our latest makes.
So whatever your skill level, don’t be intimidated! Join our cosy group make some great new friends and be with us to celebrate our next birthday!
