Book Reading

Book Reading 1

Leader: John Fazackerley Tel: 01604 470342.
Deputy: Ella Lewis-Nichol Tel: 01604 710766

Meetings take place on the first Monday of the month at 2pm at members’ homes, although we are meeting by Zoom at the moment.

Books are chosen by each member in turn for a few months in advance so that we always have a list of what to purchase or borrow from the library. As well as discussing members’ reactions to the book, we try to include details of the author’s life, themes and experience. We also look at what critics in the media have said about the book, especially if it is current and then go on to analyse what makes for a good read. Since we are all different, we all have a different perspective.

Recent books have been:
Melmoth – Sarah Perry
Call of the Wild – Jack London
The White Tiger – Aravind Adija
Winter - Ali Smith
The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner - James Hogg
The Girl with the Louding Voice - Abi Daré
The Shadow King - Maaza Mengiste
Golden Hill - Francis Spufford

Prospective members may ring John or Ella or email using the link on the top right.

Book Reading 2

Leader: Anne Relf Tel: 01536 626113

Meetings are held about once a month on the 2nd Tuesday at the leaders home.

Members do not all read the same book, but instead they all contribute books and take away as many as they fancy. At the following meeting every member gives a synopsis and says whether they liked the book or otherwise.

The meetings are very informal and members ‘have a good laugh’

Telephone Anne or email using the link on the top right to book your place.

The Group meets on the first Saturday of every month at 2.00 pm at members' homes.

The Saturday book group who meet on the first Saturday afternoon of the month have space for new members. Each member takes it in turn to choose a book which is discussed at the following meeting. This leads us to read books outside our normal structure and leads also to lively discussions.

The group have been meeting on Zoom but hope weather permitting to meet in the garden next time.

If you would like to know more ring Vicky on 01604 764552 or email using the link at the top of the page if you prefer.

Books and Natter

Leader: Susan Lowis Tel: 01604 785847
Deputy: Sue Shurville Tel: 01604 494374

This is an informal group of readers. We meet once a month in members homes. Anyone is welcome though, whether you have room to host it or not, there are enough people who are able to host it. We meet on the third Monday in the month at 2.30pm.

NEWS - Book and Natter meeting in April 2021 for the first time in somebody’s garden in over a year.

We discuss the books we have read during the previous month. Sometimes people bring books to share if they have finished with them. Others read on e readers but it is still possible to share what we have read and whether we enjoyed it or not. We do not specify a particular book to read so there is no stress to finish reading before the meeting. We enjoy a cup of tea and a biscuit and some lively chat.

New members are welcome.

Please phone Susan or email her using the link on the right for more information.

Book Exchange

Contact: Gill Garrett Tel: 01604 647404 or 07488 276203.
Contact: Mo Bridges Tel 07867 424806.

The idea behind the group is to enable exchange of books whilst restrictions limit our opportunity to access reading material. Although especially aimed at U3A members who do not Zoom and cannot participate in other groups, it is also open to members who have limited mobility and transport issues. Fiction and non-fiction books that are in good condition and no longer required by donors have been collected and titles collated into a Book List that will be updated each month.

Please contact either of the Contacts by phone email using the link on the top right for more details.
