Taste is the Key

It`s that time of year for the veggy group to have its annual tomato tasting event.
This year being very good for tomato`s with the sunny weather giving a bumper crop, only problem being on the larger fruits, blossom end rot even with regular watering.
We tasted the cherry toms in July and larger tomato`s in August - in picture from top left, Gardeners Delight, Garden Pearl, Red Alert, Ferline

Cherry Tomato`s
• Tumbling Tom – Good flavour
• Garden Pearl – Best flavour (Recommended)
• Sweet Millions – Very sweet, too much for some people. Over powers flavour
• Sweet Appetit – Sweet taste, starts to over power flavour.

Larger tomato`s
• Bloody Butcher – Deep red and full of flavour (Recommended) - see picture.
• Heintz 1371 – Fleshy but with little flavour.
• Gardens Delight – Very good flavour
• First in field – Little flavour.
• Ferline – Fleshy with good flavour.
• Red Alert – Smaller tomato with good flavour.
• Money Maker - Juicy but little flavour.

All tasting was done blind, last years favourite Sweet Millions and Gardens Delight being replaced by Garden Pearl, and Bloody Butcher.

Veggy group meet on the afternoon of the 3rd Tuesday of the month at members homes / allotments. We discuss our disasters / triumphs, pass on knowledge and expertise and donate our excess of seeds / seedlings. If lucky also excess of produce is shared between us.

We have a varied programme for the year, including garden visits as well as a variety of topics, a plant swap and garden centre visits. We sometimes buy plants and bulbs online and compare them as they grow, and we often have seedlings to give away.
