HISTORY OF ART
Leader Shena Humphreys Tel: 01604 674193
The group meets on the 2nd Thursday at 10.30am at St Matthews Parish Centre, The Drive, Northampton.
We are quite a large group but we usually have space for 2 or 3 more members who would be made very welcome. The Group is structured in the same way as most other groups in the u3a in that the members will be asked to do some research on a subject and present their findings to the group.
Our emphasis as a whole is on Art of the 19/20/21st century. We include pottery, sculpture, photography, art installations as well as the more traditional painting.
At our last meeting we had presentations on Lord Leighton and Anish Kapoor, two very different artists and at our next meeting presentations will be about John Millais and Alphonse Mucha. Coming soon will be Banksy, Cartier Bresson, Grayson Perry etc. As you can see the range of subjects is diverse.
We recently had an outing to Kelmscott Manor and hopefully in the New Year we will visit a couple of more galleries.
We are all attending the Group because we like Art and want to learn more about it. You don’t have to be an expert, none of us are. All presentations are gratefully received and much appreciated. If there were no members contributing then there would be no group.
Please contact Shena for more information or to register your interest by phone or use the email link on the top right.

HISTORY OF ART 2
Leader: Nick Tippler Tel No: 01604 415291
The group meets on the 4th Thursday between 10.30 and 12.30, all year round, at St Matthews Parish Centre, The Drive, Northampton.
Our current long topic is “British Art Through The Ages”. This will run throughout 2023 and 2024.
We discuss different types of art, and the meaning of art. No two people have the same opinion about what art is or should mean, so we can have some lively discussions. In the past, we took a chronological look at art history, beginning with early painters, such as Giotto, and worked our way forward to the twentieth century. We have looked at the pre-Raphaelites, the Impressionists, 20th century war artists, the Russian Revolution, American art in the long 20th Century, and others.
Our members choose their topics by ballot - everyone puts an idea in the hat, and we vote on the suggestions.
New members are welcome. No previous experience of art history is necessary. An opinion is always helpful!
