The Spanish Group meets every Friday between 10am and midday at the Heritage Centre in Yate which has disabled facilities and parking. Each of us brings our own refreshments as we can use the kettle, mugs and washing up facilities there. Our meetings are fun and full of conversation in Spanish. This is now a group for intermediate level and above and so it is not suitable for complete beginners.
Not every member attends every week but this is not a problem because at intermediate level and above it is easy to pick up the language and join in the activities. Practical activities include presentations from members of the group, role playing activities and games, listening to Spanish on CDs, as well as translations of authentic material from Spanish newspapers and other articles in Spanish.
The group has completed Access Spanish Book 1 by Maria Utrera Cejudo, BBC Talk Spanish Book 1 with accompanying CDs and the Linguaphone series for beginners. Members use computer websites such as Duolingo, Babel, 123teachme and the BBC languages website to practise at home. An e mail contact address, computer and printer are essential so that you can receive information from me and worksheets to print off prior to our meetings. Homework is optional and self-marked. There is no formal teaching which is in the true U3A spirit of co-operative learning as a group.
Since the maximum capacity for seating around the table in the room we hire is ten, we are unable to exceed this number. We share the cost of hiring the Heritage Centre which has to be paid for in advance. Therefore, it is necessary to be committed to the full number of sessions booked and make advance payment at the beginning of each block booking. Currently the group is full but places may become available in the future. Please enquire if interested.
