We currently have 12 Members in our Group, meeting on 4th Thursday of each month excluding September and December.
Our book programme is compiled each autumn when Members are invited to suggest books that they would like to see included in the year’s programme . These suggestions are combined, a voting paper produced and circulated. Each Member is allowed up to 8 votes returning the paper to the Leader who then counts the entries and selects the most popular titles. The programme begins in January although produced and circulated during November the previous year – giving adequate time for everyone to obtain copies of the nominated books. Two of the books during the year will be Classic titles, 6 will be popular titles, the other 2 monthly meetings are “Members’ Choice” where no set book is set; instead we each make our own individual contribution; it might be a poem, a newspaper article or a book we have read which has inspired us to share it with others.
Although not seeking new members, if anyone wanted to join, I am sure we could accommodate one more member. In normal times when we meet as a Group, we average 7/9 members giving adequate opportunity to hear the views of everyone.
Since the current restrictions, we have been writing up our comments by email, sending them to each member of the Group. This has certainly expanded the views of everyone since no one is inhibited by the fact that someone has already made a similar comment; but it also gives the opportunity to prompt further ideas.
We are hoping to try Zoom for our October and November meetings; if this suits everyone, we will probably continue with this until “normal times.”
