LEISURE WALKING
The Leisure Group walk is on the 4th Tuesday of every month except December. The co-ordinator is Janet Lambert. Group walking has become very popular with 3 walking groups meeting on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks of each month. However, we have become aware that there might be an interest in a new Leisure Walking Group focused on walks of about 4 miles prepared to pause to take photos, look at birds, flowers or just look at the scenery.
Hampden Common was the start point for May's circular walk of around 3.5 miles. No stiles and just one short uphill at the end, the walk took us through fields to St Mary Magdelene church and Hampden House. We then followed Grims Ditch to Redlands End, on to Coppice House, through Monkton Wood back to the start. Many thanks to Gill for a lovely morning.
Hambleden in February was led by Peter Gibbon At 2.5 miles, this was an easy stile-free walk on paths and lanes with a total ascent of 20m/60ft. This was a lovely short walk, suitable for people of all abilities. It had one of the more unusual crossings of the Thames and beautiful views of local countryside.
Cookham Moor was the start of our January walk that took us along parts of Winter Hill golf course towards Cliveden, then headed across the marshes to the banks of the Thames. We stopped for a breather at the The Bounty where some of us recalled the ferry that used to take us across the river to Bourne End. From there it was a gentle stroll along the towpath back to the town. There were several points of interest along the way including a peek at Stanley Spencer's 'The Last Supper' hanging in the church. The mud wasn't too soft, the sky not too dark and the company was very agreeable.
