The Art Appreciation Group meets in Bucknell Village Hall on the 2nd Thursday of the month between 2.15 and 4.15 pm. We charge £2 per head to cover the cost of the hall and refreshments.
We have a friendly meeting with an illustrated talk by one of our members or a DVD and a discussion afterwards on that meeting’s topic, followed by tea and biscuits.
We don’t have a historical or national theme for talks, so that it is up to members to choose what to talk about. This makes for a varied programme with last year’s talks being a mix of modern (Tamara de Lempicka, Stanley Spencer, Banksy) with more traditional topics such as the Pre-Raphaelites and Victorian Art, the Metropolitan Museum, Sculpture, a personal view, and we branched out with a talk on Norman Foster Architecture. DVDs were on Paula Rego and Lowry.
We try to have a visit to an art gallery instead of the Month's meeting. Two years ago we had an excellent visit to the Higgins in Bedford and last year we had a guided tour of Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford.
In June (2019) nine of us had a lovely visit to Compton Verney Gallery to see the exhibition on "Painting Childhood". Despite appalling weather driving on the motorway to get there, the sun came out and we were very well looked after as a group, having coffee on arrival, a private guided tour of the exhibition with the best guide we could have hoped for, followed by a pre-booked splendid lunch. There was then some free time to see the rest of the gallery before returning to Bicester. All in all, a lovely day out.
The group continues to grow but we have plenty of space to accommodate new members, who are always made most welcome. No knowledge is required, just an enthusiasm to find out more about artists you may like, or about someone you may never have even heard of!
