Our recent visit to Compton Verney

At the end of March, 18 of us from the Art Appreciation group had a very enjoyable visit to the ‘Gainsborough’s Landscapes Exhibition’ at Compton Verney in Warwickshire just about 45 minutes away and well worth a visit, not only for the excellent Gainsborough Exhibition, but for the place itself.

We had a special guided tour of the exhibition which is the first exhibition in fifty years solely devoted to Gainsborough’s landscapes, bringing together a wonderful group of paintings and drawings from public and private collections spanning his whole career. We also had a whistle stop tour around other parts of the art gallery which really wetted our appetite to go back and have a closer look.

For anyone who hasn’t been it has something for everyone. Compton Verney is Warwickshire's award-winning art gallery which houses six permanent collections, focusing on areas currently under-represented in British museums and galleries. Since its opening in 2004, it has continued to deliver an exciting international programme of exhibitions and events, alongside a diverse collection of art from around the world. It offers visitors the unique opportunity to view art in the setting of a Grade I listed Georgian mansion located in 120 acres of spectacular parkland.

The Gainsborough’s Landscapes Exhibition is on now until the 10th June. Also on until the 10th June is an exhibition entitled ‘Into the light: French and British painting from Impressionism to the early 1920s’. We didn’t get a chance to see it this time but I am sure many of us will go back to see it.

Our thanks to Christine for organising this most enjoyable afternoon out.
