Family History for Beginners
Family History research is an activity that is normally undertaken by individuals working on their own. It is detective work. Taking the first steps can be daunting but with a little guidance, it is possible to quickly master the basics.
Initially, some notes will be circulated to Group members by email to cover many of the basic issues such as how best to get started, and where to look for information. That may be all that some people require. If, however, there is an interest in seeing how different websites can be used to find material then, working on a 1-to-1, or possibly 1-to-2 basis, a few tuition sessions will be offered to individuals to demonstrate how new information can be uncovered. As most of that information is now to be found online, a working knowledge of how to use a computer is desirable.
For demonstration purposes, searches will be conducted using well-known deceased people as examples. If members wish to use a tuition session to explore their own families, then it is important to be aware that they would need to share some details of their family with the tutor. An informed consent form will need to be signed by members before such a search can be conducted. It will of course be up to each member to decide whether they wish to take that step, or not.
Once members have started on their own research the Group Leader will be happy to answer, to the best of his ability, any further questions as they arise. If you would like further information, please contact the Family History for Beginners Group Leader or the Group Co-ordinator.
