Spring Break. No meetings scheduled for 27 March or 10 April 2024
We are taking a break until 24th April 2024 and will then learn about The Pasadena Roof Orchestra. In 1969 John Arthy, a professional baker, acquired a library of dance music from the 1920’s and 30’s. The first tune on top of the huge pile brought home in his van was ‘Home in Pasadena’. In this period, many hotels had roof gardens and roof orchestras. Hence the birth of the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Their first concert took place on 26 April 1970. Still on tour today, the Orchestra celebrated its 40th anniversary with a concert recorded live at Cadogan Hall in May 2010. The DVD this session is a unique souvenir of the occasion.
Music is the most pervasive of the arts. Our Members may not walk everywhere with earbuds linked to their mobiles, but it won’t be long after we’ve switched on the television or radio that we hear music accompanying films or advertisements, requests, whatever. Some will play an instrument, sing or dance, or simply listen to background music on the radio while washing the dishes. Music is also the most abstract of the arts. The first four notes of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony are as recognisable as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Do those four notes appear lifelike to you?
Our Music Enjoyment Group is unique in that we explore the important influences behind musical creation, including the prevailing social and economic conditions when the pieces are composed, the emotions, experiences, and aspirations of the composer. Musical genres have included baroque, classical, romantic and post-romantic concertos and symphonies; ballet; opera; jazz; popular and world music.
Music is about life. Enjoy!
Feedback and assistance with the programme always welcome.
Group meetings restricted to u3a members only. More members are welcome to join our group.
