We are an informal, friendly Singing for Fun group, and we love to have a go at singing songs in a variety of styles, like pop, folk, rock, musicals...
Always open to new challenges, and suggestions by the singers, we are currently very keen to recruit new singers, especially male singers, to give us a chance to sing even more harmonies. We are currently singing Happy Together, With a little help from my friends, We are the champions, etc.
This year Singing for Fun will reach its tenth anniversary. Our numbers have waxed and waned, having grown steadily until the pandemic when they plummeted under the influence of Zoom. It was impossible to sing together using Zoom. Since then we have gradually recovered numbers and we now have twenty members when we are at full strength.
We meet in the Old Smithy in Wembury, although during the pandemic we met in a garden in the summer and St Werburgh’s church in the winter. We have sung about 110 different songs in that time, most of which were specially arranged for us. Most of the arrangements are for two or three parts. We try to ring the changes in what we do. Just before Christmas we took part in a concert in Wembury when we were accompanied by a band of guitars and bass as well as the piano.
We sing from music although you don’t have to be able to read it. The idea is to sing each song the best that we can which may involve some note-bashing. We have three terms a year with about ten songs in each term. Potentially, we could perform any of them. It is not a karaoke sort of sing song.
We meet in the Old Smithy in Wembury which has a great acoustic and still has the original hearth and bellows. The sessions happen on the first and third Tuesdays in the month at 10.30. Anyone is welcome to come along and see if it suits them. Give either Gunnevi (862261) or me a ring or just turn up.
The music we sing ranges from pop songs through folk songs and show numbers with occasional oddities such as madrigals and 11th Century chants thrown in....but nothing too serious.
