Bridge Group (Intermediate, Experienced)

a) Our group of 20 plus meets for three hours of contract bridge on Monday afternoon at 2pm. We meet every week of the year apart from the principal holidays.

b) The venue is the Old Actonians Sports Club, Gunnersbury Drive, W5 4LL.

c) At each weekly meeting we rotate the groups so that everyone gets the chance to play with a new partner and new opposition.

d) Obviously we meet to play serious bridge but this does not preclude the opportunity for 10 to 15 minutes of gossip before battle commences...

e) New members will need to have played for a few years to feel comfortable at the club. That said, as with most competitive pastimes, there is a range of abilities within our group. Unfortunately,at present membership is full and there is a waiting list.

f) Every year,in May, we enter a team in the U3A Bridge Tournament that is held in Hook, Hampshire. In 2016 we came seventh out of the 40 teams competing. Each year we have managed to improve on the previous year's position. (Of course, this can be interpreted as us getting better or, perhaps, the opposition is getting weaker.)

The group has been playing bridge together for some ten years. Quite a number of us have been members from the club's inception. As we play about 45 times a year that's getting on for 1500 hours of bridge! I wonder how many interest groups can match that.
