Music 1 and 2
Due to high demand there have been two music groups since the beginning. Initially they followed parallel programmes then deviated to follow the interests of the members of each group. The guiding principal has always been the enjoyment of music.
The classes both take place at the home of the convener of the groups, at St Stephens Court, W13. They meet once a month generally in the first week of the month at 10.30 – 12pm on Wednesday for Group 1 and Friday for Group 2.
Members who are willing choose a selection of music to talk about. They are given every encouragement to do so. The programmes reflect the evolving interests of the members, usually agreed two to three months in advance.
We usually listen to music on CDs using a small Bose portable player, (several members were so impressed with the sound quality that they bought their own for use at home). One of our presenters has the skill to make entertaining compilations on DVD. We usually view opera and ballet, and sometimes orchestral music on DVD.
Range of topics
At a single meeting we usually look at a composer’s life and works, look at a single work in depth, explore the history of a musical instrument, a specific musical form such as quintets, a specific musician or a theme.
Type of music
It is usually classical but we have had sessions on Jazz and Swing. At least once a year we have an ‘anything goes’ session where all members are invited to bring a favourite recording and say a few words about it if they wish. This brings in a wide range of music which needs careful programming.
Numbers and vacancies
There are 12 members of Music Group 1 and 10 in Group 2. With 12 being the optimum number, this leaves just 2 vacancies in Group 2.
