Due to a high level of interest, the first meeting of the group, which was proposed for November 2023, has been postponed to the new year in order for logistics to be addressed.
Here are Roberta's my ideas for the group.
"When I moved here last September, I joined U3A to meet people and expressed an interest in a proposed new group, ‘Customs and Folklore around the World’. I discovered that the group had no leader and considered running for the hills but I reflected and decided I’d give it a go under the broader umbrella of ‘World Culture’. I have delivered lessons on world culture and languages in primary schools in Herefordshire and have personal experience of living overseas growing up. We also hosted many foreign students when our sons were growing up.
I do not envisage lengthy talks (though we might find some worthwhile speakers) but a group working together and doing the things that interest its members. Perhaps we can decide the topic for the next month in advance at the end of the previous group meeting. That way, people can opt in and out easily. We could talk about our travels and current affairs; investigate literature and music, history, geography and RE; watch a subtitled film (I have many DVDs); play with art and crafts; research folklore and celebrations; taste food and perhaps visit places of worship; etc."
