Church Visits
GROUP LEADER: Please get in touch with, Mary Wright, who can be contacted via the Ru3a message page.
VACANCIES: New members are very welcome.
VENUE: Churches around the county of Rutland. We may stray further afield on occasion.
DATE AND FREQUENCY: Members take turns in arranging visits, which are usually on the second Wednesday of the month March to October. . Any member can suggest a church venue. we ask you to arrange it too. Start time at the church venue is normally 2.30 pm. Winter we could meet up for a coffee in Oakham if there is enough support.
DESCRIPTION: The Church Visits Group was set up in Spring 2015, and has roughly 25 members including several couples. People come and people go.
The Group’s main focus is to enjoy a church in Rutland. The fabric, the windows, the chancel, every last bit of these ancient churches is fun to view. Even the graveyard has its fascinating aspects. We have crossed the border on occasion, such as our visit to Launde Abbey. The outing is the enjoyment.
In each case we try to arrange to be taken round by someone closely associated with the church who can tell us something about its history and architecture. In many cases this has been by an incumbent minister, but sometimes by a lay person who may know a little more. At Exton Hall we were privileged to be guided by the son of the owner, so we had a very special personal welcome.
Reports on our visits are included in the Rutland u3a Newsletter.
