The Striders
GROUP COORDINATOR: If you would like more information or would like to go on the mailing list to receive the Newsletters, please contact the group coordinator Stewart MacDonald.
VACANCIES: This group is currently accepting new members especially for the shorter walk programme.
VENUE: Various
DATE AND FREQUENCY: The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month. Walks are between 8 and 10 miles in length and are within a 30 minute travelling distance of Oakham although during British Summer Time we sometimes travel up to 45 minutes to access the walk, this is at the walk leaders discretion. It is a full day walk usually setting off at 10.30am with a finish time of approximately 3.30pm. All of our walks are circular walks. Walkers need to carry a packed lunch as we have a short coffee break and a lunch break en route. Once a year, usually in June, we have an "away day" where we plan a walk further afield.
The group has recently introduced a shorter walk on the first Tuesday of the month between the months of April and October. these walks are between 7 and 8 miles and are within 30 minutes travelling distance of Oakham. These walks finish around 2:30pm.
DESCRIPTION: The Striders walking group was formed following a meeting to discuss walking groups in February 2014.
Members of the group volunteer to lead the walks though you are not obliged to lead if you do not wish to. If members would like to lead but are a little uncertain then support in planning and leading a walk can be provided by more experienced members.
Details of the walks are circulated by email through a regular Newsletter usually sent out a few weeks before each walk. Members make their own way to the start point of the walk although car sharing is encouraged. Directions on how to get to the start point are provided in the Newsletter. Within 7 days of the walk start all communications are posted on the groups' WhatsApp chat.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL WALKERS:
Walkers are responsible for the safety of themselves and others during the walk. It is the responsibility of each walker to assess what the walk involves and to ensure they are physically able to do the walk on the day. Information on each walk is available from the walk description issued in the Newsletter. If further information is required this can be obtained by asking the walk leader or group coordinator.
All walkers MUST carry ICE (In Case of Emergency) information and a form for this purpose is available from the group coordinator. This should be kept in your rucksack or in an outside coat pocket.
The group coordinator carries a list of all mobile phone numbers on each walk and if the group coordinator is not present provides a list to the walk leader. If you are unhappy to disclose your mobile in this way please let the group coordinator know.
The Striders walking group has recently added a new shorter walk programme (up to 8 miles) alongside its established programme of longer walks (up to 10 miles). The shorter walks are running on the first Tuesday of the month between April and October and all start within a 30 minute travelling distance of Oakham. The longer walks continue to run on the third Tuesday of the month. All walks are circular and the group stop for a coffee break and a picnic lunch en route.
Members are free to access any of the groups’ walks.
