The Striders

GROUP COORDINATOR: If you would like more information or would like to go on the mailing list to receive the monthly Newsletter, please contact Stewart MacDonald.

VACANCIES: Welcoming new members

VENUE: Various

DATE AND FREQUENCY: The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month. Walks are between 8 and 10 miles in length and are within a 30 minute travelling distance of Oakham. It is a full day walk usually setting off at 10.30am with a finish time of approximately 3.30pm. All of our walks are circular walks. Walkers need to carry a packed lunch as we have a short coffee break and a lunch break en route. Once a year, usually in June, we have an "away day" where we plan a walk further afield.

DESCRIPTION: The Striders walking group was formed following a meeting to discuss walking groups in February 2014. This group is for those U3A members who would like a longer walk.

Members of the group volunteer to lead the walks though you are not obliged to lead a walk if you do not wish. If members would like to lead but are a little uncertain then support in planning and leading a walk can be provided by more experienced members.

Details of each walk are circulated by email through a monthly Newsletter. Members make their own way to the start point of the walk. Directions on how to get to the start point are provided in the monthly Newsletter. Members are invited to share cars. This can be negotiated before each walk.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL WALKERS:

Walkers are responsible for the safety of themselves and others during the walk. It is the responsibility of each walker to assess what the walk involves and to ensure they are physically able to do the walk on the day. Information on each walk is available from the walk description issued in the monthly Newsletter. If further information is required this can be obtained by asking the walk leader or group coordinator.

All walkers MUST carry ICE (In Case of Emergency) information and a form for this purpose is available from the group coordinator. This should be kept in your rucksack or in an outside coat pocket.

The group coordinator carries a list of all mobile phone numbers on each walk and if the group coordinator is not present provides a list to the walk leader. If you are unhappy to disclose your mobile in this way please let the group coordinator know.
