LOCAL HISTORY
We are visiting Waltham Abbey Church on Wednesday 15th May 2024 where we will have a guided tour given by one of the volunteers there.
We will be meeting on Tuesday 7th May at 10:30am at Brookfield Tecco Community Room where one of our group will give a talk on “The New River”. This will be a shorter than usual meeting due to other groups meeting before and after our allotted time.

Our group met again on Tuesday 2nd April and was well attended. The group discussed various projects and ideas for speakers. We went to Cheshunt Library on Friday 19th April where we had the opportunity to view large scale and aerial maps of the local area. This will hopefully start a “house through time” project on Cheshunt Great House and/or Whit Hern. We were able to see the large-scale development of the area since the late 1800s.

Our group met for the second time on Monday 4th March 2024. Again, it was very well attended and we had a discussion about ‘Shops, Past and Present in Cheshunt and Waltham Cross’. It is very interesting to hear how retail has changed over recent years and we heard from people who had run shops in the area.
Some of our members will have attended a lecture on Hertfordshire Almshouses given by the Friends of Lowewood Museum on Tuesday 19th March 2024.

The Local History Group met for the first time at Brookfield Tesco Community Room on Monday 5th February 2024. There was a very good turnout and we had a vibrant discussion about our interest in history, how the group will function and ideas for discussion topics and visits.
On Friday 9th February 2024 the group had lunch at the 500-year-old Golden Lion in Hoddesdon and found out about its history and then 11 went onto the Lowewood Museum to see their exhibition on ‘Borough Beats, to view the artefacts on display there and hear from a member of staff about their the background.
