SHORT WALKS

This Group undertakes short walks, 2½ - 3miles, usually every second Friday of the month.

A merry band of short walkers had a very pleasant walk in sunny weather, from Broxbourne to Rye House, along the river Lee navigation - a distance of 3 miles.

The May 2024 walk will be a circular one from Rye House station along the New River to St Margarets and then back to Rye House along the Lee navigation. 3 miles in total.

Take the 10:09am train from Cheshunt station to meet at 10:20am at Rye House station on Friday 10th May.

Free parking at the Rye house gatehouse car park.

APRIL 2024

April's Walk was another 3 mile one from Broxbourne Riverside Cafe to Rye House, again along the River Lee Navigation via Dobbs Weir.

MARCH 2024

March's Walk was along the River Lee from Pindar Car Park at Cheshunt to The Riverside Cafe at Broxbourne. We saw several Herons and even a pair of Swans mating, before we enjoyed a Coffee and Cake at the cafe. A total of 3 miles on a sunny but brisk day.

JANUARY 2024

16 Short walkers had a pleasant first walk of the new year from Pindar carpark to the White Water Centre and back via the Showground.

DECEMBER 2023

A good turnout for our December walk from Ware to Hertford and nice dry and sunny day to boot !

NOVEMBER 2023
Novembers Walk had 13 Short Walkers who dodged the rain and enjoyed a pleasant walk from St Margarets station to Ware along the Lee Navigation.

OCTOBER 2023

Nine hardy souls turned up for our last walk, a circular route from Rye House to St Margarets, via the New River and River Lee Navigation and back to Rye House. It was tipping down when I arrived, but before the walk started it stopped! I must have been behaving! All nine of us went to the Rye House Pub for an amazing value 'Senior's' Lunch.

SEPTEMBER 2023
9 Members had a nice walk from Broxbourne along the New River to Rye House where some stopped for lunch before getting the train back to Broxbourne/Cheshunt.

JULY 2023

11 Brave souls walked from Cheshunt Pindar Car Park to Broxbourne (2.9 miles) in the pouring rain on our July Walk and were happy to get a hot coffee at the riverside cafe.

JUNE 2023

Once again the rail unions prevented us from doing the proposed Hertford to Ware walk. So after meeting at Cheshunt station we walked in the Lee valley on a circular walk and finished up at the YHA cafe.

APRIL 2023

10 Short Walkers met a Pindar Car Park for a lovely walk around Hooks Marsh and Friday Lake, Despite a threatning BBC Forecast we only encountered a small shower and the walk was enjoyed by all.

MARCH 2023

A big thank you to Heather Douglas for leading our last short walk from Pindar and around 70 Acre lake on the 10th March, Despite the terrible weather forecast 6 brave souls turned up and enjoyed this walk.

FEBRUARY 2023

21 Short Walkers met opposite Wormley Free Church for a very pleasant walk along the New River up to Broxbourne School and then through the golf centre and up through Wormley Woods. We arrived at the Golf Centre Cafe/Bar much to the surprise of the single staff member, but he could not have been more helpfull and all were watered and fed as required in a shorter time than we thought possible.

JANUARY 2023

15 Short Walkers met at Pindar Car Park for a walk to the White water Centre on a beautiful sunny winter’s day. We enjoyed refreshments at the centre before returning to Pindar.

OCTOBER 2022

On 14th Oct:- 14 Short walkers met at Pindar Car Park for a gentle stroll to the White Water Centre, via Bowers Water, the Lillypad walk and back via the showground and lock. Weather was kind to us and we enjoyed an open air coffee on the WWC deck whilst watching those brave enough to go on the Rafts.

AUGUST 2022

Another disappointing turn out for our August Walk around Wormley, A Temp of 38c on the day no doubt put many off.

JULY 2022

Despite a rather poor attendance at our July walk around Gunpowder park,5 short walkers enjoyed a mostly shady walk around this beautiful park. No doubt others were put off by the extreme weather or like us were getting a short holiday in before the schools finish.

JUNE WALK
June's Walk was going to be Cheshunt to Broxbourne but after taking a detour across the Navigation, we ended up with a circular walk around some unknown areas of the park and back to Cheshunt. A nice walk in lovely weather of circa 3.25 miles for the 10 walkers.

MAY 2022

16 Short Walkers met at Rye House car park for a walk around the RSPB Rye Meads sanctuary, Where we hoped to see Kingfishers, Oh well maybe next time !
we walked for 2.5 miles around the site and next door on the Herts Reserve and then most of us adjourned to the Rye House Pub only to be met by the least hospitable bar person I have ever met. there were around 6 existing customers and we were told any food wood take at least 45 mins and longer if we all ordered. We were also instructed not to move any chairs and asked why we had not booked. Needless to say we all left and I would give them a trip advisor score of 0 !

FEBRUARY 2022

Last Walk on Fri 11th March was Walthamstow Wetlands and the Paddock Park. 12 short walkers enjoyed this lovely open space in the middle of London.

JANUARY 2022

A smaller group than usual with two dogs met at the Broxbourne riverside cafe on a bright sunny day to walk the 3 miles to Rye House alongside the River Lee, Half of the party returned to Broxbourne by train whilst the other half did a further 1.5 miles to St Margarets where we enjoyed a pub lunch. We have now walked from Broxbourne to Hertford.

NOVEMBER WALK

Nov 12th:-16 Short walkers, had a pleasant walk from Ware Station along the River Lee to Hartford where we all went to the Six Templars for lunch/coffee.

OCTOBER WALK

22 Short Walkers met at Turnford Brook car park on the 8th Oct for a walk through the Lee Valley Park to the new Wildlife Centre on Hooks Marsh Lake where the Voluteers there gave us a short guided tour and then on to Lee Valley Farm Cafe for a cup of the overpriced Tea or Coffee, but we did get given some shortbread ! and thence back to Turnford Brook

SEPTEMBER WALK 2021

10th Sep 2021:- 16 Short Walkers met at Cedars Park just after a
torrential downpour for a pleasant and hopeful entertaining walk along the New river to where it crosses the M25 in an Aqueduct. Andy Smith gave a short history about the New River, which was started in 1604 to bring fresh water into the city of London. The weather was kind throughout the route but within 200 yards of the finish back at Cedars Park the heavens opened again soaking us all.

OCTOBER WALK 2020

Next Walk:- 8th Oct 2021 10.15 FOR 10.30 Start from Turnford Brook car park (presently still free) to Lee Valley farm with a short guided tour of the New Wildlife Centre and then a stop st the farm cafe which has recenty incresed it prices Tea £2.95 Coffee £3.50. Turnford Brook Car Park is situated adjacent to Saint Clement Church on Cheshunt Wash EN8 0LU

SEPTEMBER WALK

Fri 13th Aug:-A group of 19 short walkers left Pindar Car Park for a pleasant stroll to the White Water Centre for Coffee and then back via the Showground and Lock in a 3 mile figure of 8 route.

On Friday 9th August, six of us met outside Ware Station for a walk to Hertford taking an interesting alternative route.

MAY 2019
On our last walk on 10th May, 14 of us caught the bus to Waltham Abbey and visited the historic Abbey and the White Water Centre before walking through the park back to Cheshunt.

At the last outing 24 of us went from Cheshunt to White Water Centre and back.

On Friday 13th October, 23 walkers were lucky enough to enjoy a beautiful walk along the Lea Valley to Broxbourne Mill where we enjoyed refreshments at the café

On our last walk, 19 of us enjoyed glorious sunshine and also a coffee stop at the Lea Valley Farm Shop.

On our last walk we visited the remains of the Pulham Factory near to Broxbourne Station.

JUNE 2017
On our last walk, we enjoyed tea and coffee on the terrace at the Whitewater Centre and on the way back we had a close encounter with a grey Heron.

On our last walk, 9 of us enjoyed the leafy glades of Epping Forest.
18 of us enjoyed an exploration of Forty Hall Gardens and Mydleton House Gardens on our last walk. A fine day was had by all.

----- On Friday 13th January, 14 of us braved driving wet snow to explore Cedars Park and its surroundings. Afterwards we enjoyed refreshments in the Park Café. (Group photo from front page) -----

On our September walk, 22 of us admired many of the spectacular outdoor sculptures in the Lea Valley Park.

On Friday 10th June, 24 of us enjoyed an easy stroll via Hall Marsh Scrape to Fishers Green and back.

On Friday 13th May, 16 of us enjoyed a walk in Epping Forest in the glorious Spring sunshine. We marveled at the great variety of trees including a very unusual specimen!!!!!!

On Friday 8th April, 21 of us enjoyed a lovely walk around 70 acres lake in the Lea Valley Park.

On our last walk, (12th February) 18 of us enjoyed exploring the beautiful Forty Hall Park. Many thanks to Helen Yule and Bob Barton for welcoming members to the January meeting.

On out first walk in 2016 (January 8th), 11 of us celebrated the New Year with a thorough exploration of Gunpowder Park just south of Waltham Abbey.

On our November walk from Cheshunt Station to Broxbourne, 21 of us braved squally showers but were rewarded at the finish with hot drinks and food at the Old Mill Cafe.

On our last walk in October, 18 of us enjoyed the glorious autumn sunshine during our circuit of the 70 acres lake.

This is proving to be a very popular group.
