Wine Appreciation 1
Co-ordinator: Audrey Stainton
Meetings: 2nd Thursday, 2.00 – 4.00 p.m., Abbott Hall Social Centre
This is a well-established group, which has several aims. One, obviously, is to taste a variety of wines from different countries and regions, from different suppliers and made from different grapes. Secondly, it is to meet and enjoy the company of others over a glass of wine. Thirdly, we hope to learn a little about wine-making processes, the geography of wine-producing areas and the factors which may affect the quality and taste of the wines we are drinking.
We generally taste 4 or 5 wines, usually a mixture of different types (red, white, sparkling etc.). The talks are generally presented by a different volunteer member of the group each month - no one is forced to be a presenter! Each tasting is followed by a discussion on whether we like the wine or not, what food or occasion would be appropriate for it and how much we would be prepared to pay for it. Occasionally, we invite a guest presenter to give a talk and present the wines.
There is a charge of £7- £10 per meeting to cover the cost of the wines and room hire, and possibly to cover the cost of accompanying nibbles, although we are currently asking members to supply their own food whilst Covid remains an issue. We generally have a special meeting at Christmas and in May (our “end of term”) where we have more expensive wines and, if possible, more elaborate food.
At the moment there is a waiting list, but if you are interested in joining us, please add your name to the list.
