Co-ordinator: Philip Heyes
Meetings: Monthly, Friday, 10.00 a.m., Abbott Hall Social Centre
The group started in 2009 and looks at the history and culture of a country using a timeline approach .
At each meeting one or (normally ) two members will have prepared a talk and will present this as they wish
They normally distribute a summary prior to the meeting which is distributed and helps us keep up to date if unable to attend .
There is much discussion during the the sessions. We normally spend about 2 years on a particular country
UPDATE - AUGUST
Most recently we have been studying the history of Portugal.
Starting in September, we shall be studying the history of the Netherlands. Like Portugal and the United Kingdom, a country with a great seafaring history. The Dutch have traditionally been rivals of Britain in trade and commerce. They have a rich cultural history – to mention only two artists, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
Be assured that this isn’t all dates, kings and personalities, we also have talks on sport, food and music, given by group members with particular interest in those areas.
We will have a stall at the U3A Open Morning on the 7th September, so come and meet us there.
These are the Group’s next meeting dates: 2nd September, 7th October, 4th November, 2nd December.
