Philosophy
Venue: St. Cuthbert's Church Centre. Melrose Room.
Day: 1st Thursday of the month.
Time: 2-4pm
Group Leader: Sue Holder.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines philosophy as the love, study or pursuit of wisdom or of knowledge of things and their causes whether theoretical or practical. Originally this included the three branches of natural, moral and metaphysical philosophy.
The format of meetings is informal and group led. There is no instructor. We are all enthusiastic amateurs! If you are interested in joining this group then send an email via the bluebird symbol leaving your telephone number.
We have a particular focus each month which might be a philosophical concept, a philosopher or a debate within philosophy.
Members of the group may volunteer to lead a session but there is no requirement to do so.
The topic is published in advance for those group members who wish to do their own preparation. Sometimes specific preparation is requested by the session leader.
Our topics have been wide ranging and have encouraged a lot of lively debate and discussion. Recently sessions have covered Capitalism, the life and writings of Michel de Montaigne, ‘Are Scientific Theories True?’, the Concept of the Other, Stoicism, and Mary Midgely to name but a few.
There is always much discussion and many laughs. Conclusions are not reached, there are only more questions often leading to ideas for future sessions.
