Moray Coast

Local History

This group has only been running since January 2018 but has become very popular with members. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Portessie Community Hall from 2:00 to 4:00pm (unless we have arranged a field trip).

This is very much a member led group and at the last meeting we struggled with rationalising our work to date which has included fields trips to:

Pluscarden Abbey, Elgin Museum, Burghead Fort and Birnie Kirk. We feel we have learned quite a lot about the Picts e.g. the Birnie Hoard suggests that the Romans were bribing the Picts, "those fearsome sailors", to sit on their hands and not be a bother on their northern frontiers.

The group decided that we would get a large map of Moray and Banffshire and plot the places we visit and the themes we encounter. We won't worry that we could be jumping from the Picts to the Jacobites as we turn our focus to Coxton Tower, Llanbryde. In preparation for our visit in May, we will be finding out about the Innes family in Moray. The unifying element of our work is 'local'.

While Eilean MacDonald has a lot on at the moment, Joan Coverley is filling in as Group Leader.

In April the Group visited Elgin Cathedral. All members have been sent an email in preparation for our visit to Coxton Tower on Tuesday, 21st May.
