Geology

The Geology Group started in February 2014. Group sessions are held in the McBoyle Hall, Portknockie on the second Thursday of the month.

The 2017-18 session closed in May with a session on Local Geology. All geology is better-understood with geological background e.g. maps. Free British Geological Survey apps exist, to give access to geological maps; iGeology, Geology of Britain Viewer.

Geological maps help us understand why scenery isn’t there by accident, but represents a snap-shot of continuing processes.

We opened the 2018-19 session with some planning of topics for the year-ahead. Then we examined the Younger Dryas Controversy and the possibility that an impact from an extra-terrestrial body was involved.
