Philosophy

The Philosophy Group meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month (September to June inclusive, but see below).

Each meeting is 2.00pm to 4.00pm at The Snug, McBoyle Hall, Portknockie

After each meeting the group leader will email a copy of his notes to philosophy group members for their personal study or reference.

The first meeting of 2018 was on the 3rd of January. It was well attended and the topic under consideration was "Facts and Values". A copy of the notes used by our leader Bob Sutton can be downloaded from the list on the right.

At the meeting on Wednesday 7th February the subject under discussion was 'God and the Philosophy of Religion', a fascinating topic which is always of recurrent interest. On Wednesday 7th March our topic for discussion was Dilemmas. As usual, our group leader, Bob Sutton, read a thought provoking paper as an introduction. There was a good turnout for the meeting and a most interesting discussion followed. A copy of the introductory notes used by our group leader can be downloaded from the list on the right. Two Types of Justice was the topic under discussion on Wednesday 4th April.

Wednesday 2nd May saw the topic 'Whatever Will Be, Will Be - or Will It?' discussed.

On Wednesday 6th June 2018 the topic under discussion was "The Naturalistic Fallacy".

The subject for discussion on Wednesday 5th September 2018 was be Medical Ethics. This discussion was expertly lead by Dr Ann Rennie.

The meeting on Wednesday 3rd October was on the topic "How do I know I am not dreaming?" This interesting topic ended up as a rather heated political debate but no blood was shed!

Wednesday 7th November saw us discuss "Utilitarianism." The greatest happiness for the greatest number and the meeting on Wednesday 5th November was on Aristotle.

On Wednesday 6th February we had a fascinating talk and discussion with Dr. Ann Rennie leading the group. The topic under discussion was "Modern Feminist Philosophers". The focus of the March Meeting was "Should we give to charity?".

The meeting of the Philosophy Group on Wednesday 3rd April 2019 discussed the topic "Does God believe in me?". The speaker for this meeting was our Group Leader, Bob Sutton. The talk delivered by Bob lead to some extremely interesting discussions.

The last meeting for the 2018 - 2019 session was on Wednesday 1st May, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. at the McBoyle Hall, Portknockie. The topic we discussed was "Beauty".

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 5th June at 2:30 p.m. at the McBoyle Hall, Portknockie. The subject under consideration will be; "Does Humanity Deserve to Survive?

Philosophy will then have a summer break until September 2019. Details will be circulated and posted on the website in advance of the meeting.
