Conversational French

Since we started in 2012, our Conversational French group has had inspiring leaders in Joan Mackenzie, Lorna Reid and Juliet Stewart.
The U3A is a self help organisation and even when we have spells without an experienced language instructor we continue to make progress; sometimes good progress. We also have a lot of fun. Currently Jane Gentles and Tam Thomson are doing the bulk of organising our learning and Helen Mills is doing the administration.

When first formed the group catered for those of little or no experience of the French Language as well as those who took French at school many years ago but had forgotten most of what they learned. Now, after several years of learning French most of us operate at "Intermediate Level."

Our Meetings

Before Lockdown meetings were held in member's homes on Tuesday evenings. Now we are learning to live with coronavirus we have one meeting a month on Zoom and one meeting a month in a room in the Fochabers Institute. We follow Covid-19 recommendations with regards to ventilation and social distancing etc. If you wish to join this group but have not been before then use the Contact link to send an email and someone will get back to you as soon as possible with directions and contact details.

Meetings are informal, relaxed, great fun and well organised.

When most of the u3a is closed over the summer months the Conversational French Group meets occasionally, and informally, in order to practice our French. Regular members will be contacted by email or by our WhatsApp Group. We usually have a social event before Christmas and another social event in the summer.

The Conversational French Group continues to meet twice a month between September and May __ once at the Institute in Fochabers and once on Zoom. We are currently reading a book of short stories at intermediate level, revising numbers (playing bingo, clocks .....). One of our group announced to the staff of a local French supermarket where they were having a family holiday that there were 60 in their family group instead of 16, hence the number work! Usually someone gives a presentation in French on a topic of their choice. And of course we generally enjoy chatting in French. Tam and Jane, who lead the Group, are fluent French speakers as are some other members. We have all made considerable progress and have had many enjoyable evenings over the time we’ve been in the Group
