Play-Reading
We meet on the second Friday afternoon every other month in members’ houses, or in Longhirst Village Hall, to read a play. to read a play.
The dates are circulated by email, and are in the Mid-Northumberland U3A Newsletter.
Our choices have, so far, avoided the deep and meaningful (so no Anhuilh or Becket) but have still ranged from broad farce to social or political drama, even dipping our toes into Shakespeare.
Our aim is to bring more life to the texts than may be possible through reading as an individual, to explore the work of playwrights that we have not met before or to re-awaken our memories of those we have come across in the past…..oh, and to have fun!
We do not see the play script before meeting and ‘parts’ are taken by members attending through a ‘lucky dip’. There is an attempt to match male to male and female to female but mismatch of group members to the required cast can result in interesting multiple and/or transgender roles!
To ensure everyone attending has a part, the ‘cast’ sometimes changes between acts.
Most importantly we do not take ourselves too seriously, or try to be too ‘actor-ish’.
