Ancient Rome

Contact Ancient Rome
Coordinator: Richard Holland

The Ancient Rome group meets once a month, the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. We meet in the garden room at Harborne Baptist Church.
We have some 15 members so there is scope for a few newcomers. We deal with the history, literature and culture of Ancient Rome. At present we are looking at the turbulent period of the late Republic, the time of Caesar, Pompey, Cicero, Cato, Antony, and Octavius (who subsequently became the first emperor - Augustus). We have enjoyed talks on various Roman poets, Lucretius, Vergil, Horace, Catullus, and on topics such as Roman education, art and architecture and religion. We have yet to deal with the period of the emperors, so there is still a wide scope of topics.
